Defenseman Jamie Zhou picked a heck of a time to score his first goal of the weekend. How about overtime of the championship game of the “Fun in the Sun” tournament? Well, that’s exactly what Jamie did to give the Jr. Ducks 14A a Labor Day weekend tournament championship.
The 4-3 overtime win over OCHC 1 in the title game capped off a 4-1 weekend for the team, led by coaches Taylor Love and Bill Grace. The win also avenged a round robin loss to OCHC in the second game of the weekend. The final three victories were all by one goal, including the semifinal and championship games in the extra period.
Graham Sugg sent the Jr. Ducks to the title contest with an overtime goal himself in the semifinal against OCHC 2. The Jr. Ducks trailed early in the game and fought off a scrappy OCHC team. Abel Bjornholm gave the Jr. Ducks a 2-1 lead early in the third and ultimately, Sugg’s goal sealed the deal in a 3-2 win for the Jr. Ducks after OCHC tied the game late.
In the preliminary round games, the Jr. Ducks took care of the Jr. Gulls, 6-2 in the opener, behind Mason Haddad’s two goals. Their second win came in game three of round robin play, tallying one goal per period in a 3-2 win over the Jr. Ducks 3.
James Shim and Devan Sakioka tended the net for the Jr. Ducks in the five-game event.
