When Great Park ICE & FivePoint Arena opened in 2019, its 280,000 square feet of space made it the largest ice facility in California and one of the largest in the United States. The idea was not only would the $110 million facility serve Southern California’s hockey and figure skating enthusiasts and become the Anaheim Ducks’ practice facility, but it would give The Rinks’ marquee venue the ability to host state-, regional- and national-level events.
Mission accomplished. Great Park ICE and FivePoint Arena has become a big draw in the hockey world, and the next month proves it.
In the space of five weeks, Great Park ICE and FivePoint Arena will play host to USA Hockey’s Boys Tier I Pacific District Championships, the CAHA Boys Tier II State Tournament and USA Hockey’s High School Nationals.
Pacific Districts kick off the run on Feb. 27-March 2. At stake are USA Hockey Nationals berths for the Jr. Ducks’ Tier I 14U, 15U, 16U and 18U teams. The Jr. Ducks have qualified AAA teams for Nationals 19 times since 2015, including the 16U and 18U teams in 2024.
The Tier II State Tournament on March 21-23 also has Nationals bids at stake for 14U, 16U and 18U levels. The Jr. Ducks have sent Tier II teams to Nationals nine times since 2013, including the 18U AA team last season.
And High School Nationals on March 26-30 is a natural fit due to the presence of the Anaheim Ducks High School Hockey League, 59 teams (including 42 varsity) strong. Santa Margarita Catholic High School was won three USAH Nationals titles – in 2013, ’18 and ’19. Is this the year an ADHSHL team joins the Eagles on that list?
As if that weren’t enough, fellow Rinks member Anaheim ICE will host the CAHA High School State Championships on March 14-16.
It’s a full month, but that’s what the goal was all along.
