Sandy has coached youth hockey in Southern California since 1999, and with the Jr. Ducks since 2014. His coaching and skills development training has helped many of the top players who have emerged from the region reach the highest levels of the sport. That includes Stanley Cup champion Beau Bennett (Pittsburgh, 2016), current NHL players Eric Comrie (Buffalo), Chase DeLeo (Ducks), Adam Erne (Detroit), Trevor Moore (Los Angeles), Matt Nieto (San Jose) and Jason Zucker (Arizona), as well as former Buffalo prospect and current Colorado College assistant coach Andrew Oglevie. In all, 11 players he has coached have reached the NHL, including nine draft picks and two who reached the League as undrafted free agents. In addition, several more of his players have played for the U.S. National Team Development Program, NCAA Division I schools, USHL and Canadian Major Junior teams.

A native of Quebec, Canada, Sandy has been the head coach for 10 AAA teams that have advanced to the USA Hockey Youth Nationals, including the first Jr. Ducks team to reach Nationals at Bantam AAA, and three of those teams won a championship. He guided the 13U AAA team to the Pacific District Tournament in 2024. In addition, five more of his teams have won a silver medal and one more a bronze medal. Overall, his teams have won more than 80 tournaments in North America.

He summarized his development philosophy as "time and patience. It takes time to break bad habits, and it takes time to build good habits. Teaching the game is what I thrive on. ... Everyone wants to be good, but are you willing to listen, learn and apply what you've learned? Talent plays a part, but having a passion for the game and being teachable is very important to a player's development. My passion is to help players who share that passion for the game."

Sandy played Division I hockey for St. Cloud State before playing professionally for the San Diego Gulls. He has a Level 5 Master Coaching certificate from USA Hockey.
